Arch fields GCM diamond assault

The 2014 girls softball season got under way this month with three tense games.

The competition is part of the Cayman Islands Little League Association’s 25th campaign, and the first round of games took place at the Field of Dreams. HSBC took on Global Captive Management in the season opener, and although GCM won the game 8-0, it was officially recorded as a victory by forfeit for HSBC due to the fact that GCM was missing a few players because of travel or illness and they were unable to field a full team.

Eight players scored runs for GCM, led by outstanding defense from shortstop Krystal Arch, who turned a double play. Rejah Welcome pitched well for HSBC in her first-ever game at that position.

In the second match, HSBC was trailing CDP 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth and final inning. Huge hits by Emma Conolly and Liz Westin capped a four-run rally that tied the score for HSBC at 6-6 with two outs. CDP pitcher Daneliz Thomas then preserved the tie for her team by striking out the final HSBC batter.

For the third game, GCM defeated CDP, 5-1, behind excellent pitching by Alisha Forbes, who allowed only two runners to reach third base throughout the entire game. Astrid Conolly and Forbes led the offense for GCM, scoring two runs each. GCM catcher Amber Mellaneo gave a tremendous effort, finishing the entire game behind the plate after getting hit in the elbow by a fastball early in the contest. Zorie McBean scored the only run for CDP.
