Heineken Sunday League leaders Fidel Wanderers took another step toward retaining the league championship by grinding out a hard fought 3-1 win against Boca Juniors on the weekend.
Boca was on par for much of the game but conceded two late goals. Boca’s striker Rodrick Pearson was the main threat throughout and scored in the 14th minute.
Wanderers slowly started to find their rhythm and on the stroke of half-time hit the equalizer when Alexander Dunn headed in. Joe Wright bundled the ball home for Wanderers following good work by Kiegel “Stamma” Atkinson. Then in the last minute, Wanderers’ utility man Shenna Hanna made it 3-1 when his persistence paid off with a close range header.
Second in the table Maples Revolution kept the pressure on the Wanderers with a comfortable 4-0 victory against Fidel’s Old Boys at Ed Bush.
Ian Jamieson headed a corner kick home at the back post in the first minute. Ten minutes later, Ben Hooper’s penalty put Maples two up. Matt Fong got his side’s third and the fourth goal arrived right on the full-time whistle when Sergio Micucci intercepted an Old Boys throw-in near his own box, and after accelerating through midfield, a perfectly weighted pass found Dennis Lee, who finished superbly.
At the TE McField Annex, Luca Zaino got back to winning ways by defeating CML Claymores 3-1. CML striker Steve Lovell shot home after 19 minutes. Luca’s short intricate passing in midfield started to cause the CML defenders problems, and it was no surprise that Kiril Deliivanov hit the equalizer.
After the interval, Luca’s goalkeeper Shane Connolly almost single-handedly kept the Claymores attackers at bay with several outstanding saves.
Delano Mitchell fired Luca ahead for the first time on 54 minutes, and then three minutes from time, the goal of the game arrived.
From a short corner kick routine, the ball was worked to Nicolas Persico on the edge of the box who fired home.
Shellaz, who recorded an eye-catching victory last week, was looking to keep up their winning streak in the last game of the day at the TE McField Annex against Harry’s, but things did not quite work out that way when they were on the wrong end of a 4-0 defeat. The only goal of the first-half was scored on 14 minutes by Jeff Thornton. After the interval, Jon Firstbrook scored his first goal of the season, and this was followed by Ric Agrella soon after. Harry’s Mark Soto struck late for the fourth goal.
This weekend at the TE McField Annex the Wanderers host the Claymores, and it is Boca against Luca. At Ed Bush, Shellaz faces the Old Boys in the first match, and then it is Harry’s versus Maples.
