Jason's healthy lead may be cut

Healthy Body Healthy Mind 5K Walk/Run is staged again from The No. 1 Shoe Shop on Hospital Road on Saturday.

Walkers start at 6:30 a.m., with the runners commencing at 7 a.m. Jason Saunders and Tiffany Cole are expected to defend their titles for fastest male and female, respectively.

Saunders will be the favorite in the second staging of this event, but he can expect a close race from the ever-improving teenager Tahj Lewis, who beat him in the Valentine’s Mile two months ago.

A new addition to the event this year is the introduction of a primary school 1-mile race. Participants can enter as individuals or as a team of five. The fastest five from the same primary school will earn the team prize of $300 for their school.

Another new feature is the use of the MyLaps timing system, which uses an extremely accurate electronic timing method.

This system will also minimize the wait time between the end of the race and the tabulation of results.

“We are excited to partner with Michele ‘Mitch’ Smith, who is making the MyLaps system available for use at the Healthy Body Healthy Mind 5K for a small fee,” said organizer Christopher Goddard.

Registration is open until Friday at 6 p.m. at Winners Circle Sports and at the No. 1 Shoe Shop for $20 for adults.

Adults signing up in a group of five or more pay a reduced fee of $15. Children under 12 sign up for $5. The first 100 participants get an event T-shirt and all participants receive 10 percent off their next purchase at any of the three sponsoring stores.

There will be prizes and medals for the winners as well as random spot prizes. “We encourage all to come out as to support this wholesome family oriented event,” said Goddard. “Special thanks to the prize sponsors World Gym, Asics, The Department of Sports, The No. 1 Shoe Shop, Sport N Zone and Winners Circle Sports.”
