A Colombian team will see if Cayman youth basketball measures up to regional standards.
A select squad from the island of San Andres will be playing the Cayman Islands national Under-16 boys team over the Easter weekend, April 19-20. Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center will host the two-game series, which is being billed as the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Under-17 Easter Invitational. Game one is slated for April 19 at 7 p.m. with game two on April 20 from 6 p.m.
Cayman’s technical director for Cayman basketball Victor ‘Voot’ O’Garro said the Cayman team has been training for months.
“Juniors in division two of the Digicel National Men’s League is essentially the Under-16 team that will play,” O’Garro said. “It’s about preparing the kids for the major tournament this summer, the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Under-16 tournament.”
Juniors, coached by the likes of Daniel Augustine as an initiative of the Cayman Islands Hoopsters youth development program, had an interesting time competing against adults. On one hand, the side finished seventh out of eight teams at 2-5. On the other hand, prodigies like Juawon Ebanks – averaging 17.9 points per game – have excelled.
