The local rugby Alex Alexander 15s league in South Sound wrapped up with the Queensgate Pigs Trotters retaining the title.
They played some scintillating rugby, winning all but one match, only losing to Fidelity Storm.
There were a few individual setbacks in some games but, in general, when the Pigs were on form, the opposition struggled to match their organization, fast pace and competitive style. The Pigs also won the AA Vase in style.
Most notable Pigs performances throughout were by Paul Lagerwey, Iain Currie and Paul Westin. While Lagerwey has now left the island, the Pigs still managed to expand their young player base and continued to develop their expansive style. Their devastating back line was the key to their dominance.
The Storm finished the season strongly as they got their first win of the season against the Iguanas in their last game and lost by only two points to the Pigs in the Dart Vase semifinal.
The Storm had a wretched time last season, but with a new-look team this time around, they are looking forward to challenging for honors. Players to watch out for who are in a particularly good vein of form are Iain Blackwell, Robbie True and Jonathan Pang, who all received plaudits at the end of the Alex Alexander Championship. The Pigs and Storm meet in the first round of the Appleton Cup this Saturday afternoon.
