Thiago Cunha, the former Cayman Islands women’s football technical director, is doing well since taking up a coaching job in Dubai last year.
Cunha got the job on short notice, and although he was reluctant to go after having done a great job nurturing the female talent in Cayman, he still helps them in their careers from afar.
Cunha coached Al Sharjah to victory in the United Arab Emirates Under-19s President’s Cup on Saturday, beating the more favored Al Nasr 1-0, scored by Salem Khalifan. It is the first time in Al Sharjah’s history they have won the U19 President’s Cup. Club owner Sheikh Sharjah put on a magnificent reception in their honor.
“It’s an honor for me be involved with Al Sharjah,” Brazilian Cunha said. “The club is 100 percent behind developing young players. We’ve developed already this year eight players for the UAE national teams.
“The players believe in what I’m saying to them every day. With dedication and hard work we can go far. We are all happy because we have made club history now.”
