Cunningham delivers for Conyers

Conyers, Dill and Pearman captured their season-ending girls softball tournament in dramatic fashion.

Conyers rallied for a thrilling 6-4 victory over regular season winners Global Captive Management in the competition’s championship game. Daneliz Thomas of Conyers and Alisha Forbes of GCM pitched superbly during the first two innings, preventing either team from scoring. In the third, Kayla Whittaker relieved Forbes and she was able to pitch out of trouble, keeping Conyers scoreless. In the bottom of the third, Maya Smith relieved Thomas and she also kept the GCM bats silent.

In the top of the fourth, Conyers struck first. With Kianda Parchmont on base, Thomas lined a ball to right field, scoring Parchmont on a very close play at the plate. Lacee Barnes then singled in Thomas, making it 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Smith got three more outs to preserve the lead. In the top of the fifth, Krystal Arch pitched for GCM, allowing no further runs. The game turned dramatically in the bottom of the fifth.

With two outs and the bases loaded, GCM’s Astrid Conolly hit a pop-fly to shallow right field, which deflected off the glove of the second baseman.

Whittaker and Krishna Arch scored on the play, tying the game at 2-2. Krystal Arch then followed with a two-run double just inside the left field line, scoring Conolly and Shanell Martinez, who had walked. Thomas then struck out the next batter to keep the score at 4-2. Conyers were down, but not out. In the top of the sixth, after one out, Parchmont singled, Thomas doubled and Ashley Rankine walked to load the bases. Barnes followed with a grounder down the third base line, which somehow got past the GCM fielder, scoring Parchmont and Thomas to tie the game.

After the second out was recorded, Krystal Morales-Ebanks walked to reload the bases. Abigail Cunningham lined a single to center, scoring Rankine and Barnes to give Conyers the 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Thomas mowed down the GCM batters in order, preserving the well-earned win for Conyers.
