A Cayman Islands referee will officiate one of the region’s biggest basketball tournaments.
Gregory Hamilton has been named as one of 18 referees assigned to the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Championships for Men and Women. Tortola in the British Virgin Islands will serve as the host on July 1 to 5 (men’s competition) and July 8 to 12 (women). Cayman will not be sending any national teams for that event. Hamilton was selected by Geraldo Fontana of Brazil, who manages referees for the Fédération Internationale de Basketball Americas region. Among the other countries sending officials are Barbados, Cuba and Jamaica.
Hamilton was re-certified as a FIBA referee in April at the FIBA Americas Referee Clinic held in Cayman. Four other local officials took part, with Bobeth and Dwight O’Garro gaining re-certification, and Ian Yearwood and Antonio Hanna earned the match commissioner title. Yearwood serves as president of the Cayman Basketball Officials Association and helped staged the sessions, which were overseen by Fontana and Terry Moore from the United States.
Yearwood, who will be match commissioner for the CentroBasket Women’s Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, on July 22 to 26, previously said Hamilton’s appointment comes ahead of Cayman sending a boys team to the CBC Under-16 Championships in August.
