Purple Dragon chops tasty, not painful, this time

Purple Dragon hosted its first Black Belt Chef Beach Barbeque and Family Day at Public Beach last week and there were plenty of chops of a different kind – on the grill.

“The event was a great success,” said coordinator Sensei Atonio Thompson. There were four Purple Dragon members vying for the title of Black Belt Chef 2014 and more than 70 hungry adults and kids ready to choose a winner on July 26.

Chefs had to put on the grill chicken, beef and turkey burger patties, pork ribs, beef steaks and hotdog sausages.

Vincent Mosley, Fernando Cugliari, Euclides “Beco” Pitta and Sonia Lawrence were the gourmet masters.

There was much talk about how good the contestants were, especially Lawrence’s barbeque chicken and Mosley’s beef steak.

Each one preseasoned their meat and each barbequed different food items at different times.

There was much talk about how good the contestants were. After a delicious day of tasting the meats, it was time to choose a winner, and the crowd had their mind made up.

Cugliari was crowned the winner with his signature barbeque sauce, fall-off-the-bone tender ribs and juicy steak with an amazing sauce.

“This event was created as an opportunity to interact and spend some much welcomed quality time with not only the students but the parents as well,” said Sensei Thompson.

“With Purple Dragon having recently completed their five month haul towards their recent grading examination and the team just returning from a very enlightening two week nonstop journey through Japan, this change from the regular routine was highly appreciated by students and parents alike.”

Purple Dragon instructor Pitta said that everyone in the club has worked hard recently, so this was an opportunity to spend some time doing something recreational and family-oriented and all had a great time.

Pitta’s whole family, including wife Dee and two children are Purple Dragon members.

He has been at the forefront of the club’s development program in recent years.
