Sonically painful but melodically pleasing – that’s the promise from a Cayman band that revels in all things hard and rocking.
Koralhed is a band that likes to party and rock and roll, and the four-piece outfit has already recorded a four song EP with a full album in the works, drummer Tag Metalhed said.
“I came up with the name,” reveals the man who sometimes goes by the name Mark McTaggart. “I was looking for something that connected our sound, hard rock with Cayman.
“Kmanite was given the thumbs down by the rest of the guys, so we all agreed on Koralhed.”
Those other guys are Alex Cazetta on lead and rhythm guitars; Brian Grandstrand up front on vocals; Lug Sung bashing the bass; and Metalhed taking care of drums and percussion.
The musicians have a fine pedigree to draw on, too. Alex was in the U.K./European band Abgott, Brian in the Canada-based Hari Kari, Lug featured with Pistola, and Tag has been seen holding down the beat and more to the likes of local bands C&B, Ratskyn and Suckerbox.
Metalhed explains that their favorite songs would include anything by U.K. mega metallers Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Black Sabbath or Dio, the band of the legendary metal vocalist and one-time Rainbow and Black Sabbath singer, the late Ronnie James Dio.
The band has an active page on the Reverbnation site, on which several songs are showcased, including “Stir Crazy,” “Watered Down Whisky,” “Rainbow in the Dark” and “When I’m Down.” Indeed, that aforementioned demo was recorded at Hopscotch Studios and mastered at Esplanade Studios in the U.S.
“[The aim of the band is] a record deal,” says Metalhed, who notes that inroads have already been made to get the sound out to a wider audience.
“Alex promoed the demo EP in Los Angeles and we actually received airplay.
“It’s a long shot, but we have our fingers crossed,” he added.
At present, the band does not have a regular home venue here in Cayman, but no doubt this will change as the group’s seemingly inexorable rise continues.
“Keep your eyes and ears open to local media for special appearances,” Metalhed said.
