England hoops trio part ways

Three of Cayman’s top basketball players will no longer be playing together in England.

Jorge Ebanks and Jerome Narcisse have left the Tees Valley Mohawks and Lloyd Samuels is the lone Caymanian player on the Middlesbrough club. The squad competes in the English Basketball League, which is in the early stages of its 2014-2015 season. Ebanks, 28, was the team captain and was named Domestic and Defensive Player of the Year and listed to the All-EBL Division One First Team. Narcisse, 27, had a good rookie season in England where he had a honorable mention for the All-EBL Division One First Team.

Head coach Steve Butler said the departure of his Cayman Islands talent comes with a desire to produce more consistent results.

“We have a new-look squad. Jorge and Jerome have left,” Butler said. “Last season we were very inconsistent, beating the top clubs and losing to the bottom clubs. I want more consistency this year and I believe I’ve got the right squad to do just that.”

The Mohawks missed the playoffs last year, as they finished ninth in the league standings at 12-14. Samuels, 27, is going into his second season after renewing his contract.

He was in Cayman briefly this summer doing offseason workouts with Narcisse, who was a free agent. Ebanks was in New York at his alma mater, Daemen College, and noted on social media he was “patiently waiting for my agent to get this deal done but my patience is running out.” The trio were team mates in Cayman, winning a title with the 2011 Dominos Warriors.
