Gymnasts leap for Carolina medals

Cayman gymnasts representing Motions Unlimited began the 2014-2015 competitive season enjoying crisp fall weather in South Carolina.

The girls team, with coaches Kelley Paz and Alison Gansebom, returned from the Crown of the Carolinas Invitational with medals and an enthusiastic outlook for meets to come. The event took place in Rock Hill, South Carolina, late last month at Winthrop University’s 30,000-square-foot facility hosting approximately 1,100 gymnasts representing 46 teams, nine states and three countries.

It was the first time Morgan Lloyd and Raegan Rutty competed with their new level 8 routines to new music at a USA Gymnastics competition. In these routines, both girls incorporated higher level skills they had not performed in competition before. Rutty earned four top-10 finishes, including All-Around, while Lloyd received five top-5 finishes, including second place in All-Around, beam and bars. This was a very promising start to the 2014/15 USAG competitive season for the Level 8 girls, and they are aiming to build on their successes at the Manhattan Classic in January.

Experienced level 3 girls Gabriella Royston, Emmi Daykin, Jaiden Gilbert and Anais Small welcomed new competition teammates Cameron Claire Doak and Tyler Woolaver to the Winthrop University venue. Daykin took home a bronze overall, placing third on vault and fourth on bars and floor in her age group. Royston, Gilbert and Small rounded out the sessions, placing ninth, 11th and 12th, respectively. Demonstrating a strong start, Doak earned an eighth-place finish, along with Woolaver gaining an 11th place spot.

The Motions team will compete through April. The boys team will have their first competition of the season this month at the Valeri Liuken Invitational in Texas. The boys and level 3 girls will compete together at the Paws for a Cause competition in Atlanta at the end of January with coach Gansebom and new coach John Leonard. The level 8 girls will show off their moves in Manhattan, New York, in January, and the entire team will participate at the Gasparilla Classic in Tampa at the end of February. Motions will finish out their season at an optional competition in Barbados in April.
