The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee is giving residents a chance to buy history.
The Committee is selling competition gear from each of this year’s major international competitions. Local athletes were featured at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland; the Nanjing Youth Olympics in China and the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico. In addition, gear will be made available from events over the last eight years.
According to the Committee, the goal is to raise funds for competing athletes next year, “It has been an incredible year for the Cayman Islands and sport. The CIOC would like to celebrate the many successes of our athletes, by holding one last fundraiser, just in time for Christmas. Next week, Dec. 15-19, you will have the chance to purchase official Cayman Islands gear from the Games. We have everything from T-shirts and fleeces to running shoes and baseball caps that have been worn.
“All funds raised will go directly into funding Caymanian athletes. Any remaining gear will be donated to developing sports teams in need of team kit. No items have been worn, all were ordered in addition to the clothing worn by our national teams.”
Cayman added two medals to its trophy case this year. At the Nanjing Games, Polly Serpell earned bronze in the equestrian team event. At the Veracruz Games, Cameron Stafford and Marlene West won gold in the squash mixed doubles event.
