Andrew Smilley is taking Cayman swimming to a wider audience.
ESPN will feature the athlete as one of the Special Olympics competitors for the 2015 World Summer Games in Los Angeles, California. The crew filmed Smilley on Tuesday doing a morning swim session at the Lions Aquatic Centre and afternoon beach training.
ESPN, a broadcast partner for the Games, is filming 40 high-profile athletes in the build-up to the spectacle. Smilley’s profile will focus on the impact of Special Olympics Cayman Islands on his life, the role of open water swimming and Smilley’s gold medal in the event at the 2011 World Games in Athens, Greece. Kester Edwards of Special Olympics International, who was in Cayman for the filming, will also be featured as the driving force behind open water swimming joining the list of Special Olympics sports at the World Games.
