Rum Run returns

The third annual Rum Run Stand Up Paddle Board Challenge weekend on Jan. 24 and 25 is shaping up to be bigger and better than last year.

Event organizer Neil Martin announced a new title sponsor, Appleton Estate Rum, and welcomed back many local and international sponsors as well.

Jan. 24 will comprise short course racing, Groms (kids) events, corporate racing, stand-up paddle boarding clinics and board demos, and a barbecue hosted by Duke’s. The race on this day will be both lighthearted and competitive, providing a personal challenge for paddle boarders of all abilities.

The signature race – the 8.5 mile crossing from Rum Point to Camana Bay – is on Jan. 25, with the finish line events hosted by Waterfront.

The corporate racing already looks to be well represented by teams from local firms. The Appleton Rum Run will have three professional riders flying in for the weekend to lead clinics and to race. Defending champion Chuck Glynn will represent Laird Stand Up; 2012 champion Rob Rojas will represent Riviera Paddle Boards; and down wind specialist Jeremy Riggs will be riding for SIC Maui.

All eyes will be on local rider Joe Curley, who dominated the Rum Run race series throughout 2014, to see how he measures up against the pros.

A new race class for surf skis has been added to the North Sound crossing.

“We love to share our passion for stand-up paddling with everyone,” said Martin. “The 2015 Appleton Rum Run will be an exciting weekend for all the family. We welcome all paddlers to join us on the water.”
