Manchester City want to sign Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba as a replacement for the unsettled Yaya Toure.
Toure has just finished playing in the Africa Cup of Nations for the Ivory Coast and City’s form has been dismal in the month he was away.
Toure is 32 in May and has made little secret of wanting a final big move – possibly back to his beloved Barcelona – before he retires from top-level football.
City look resigned to losing England midfielder James Milner too in the summer and Pogba would fill the void left by Toure or Milner – or both. The 21-year-old Frenchman is also wanted by a host of other big clubs, including Manchester United who are still ruing the fact that they allowed Pogba to leave for a pittance three years ago because they did not spot his potential. Chelsea and Real Madrid are also interested.
Since then the gangly midfielder has developed into a world class player who has helped Juventus win the league and was outstanding for France at the World Cup finals.
City are prepared to pay whatever it costs to sign him, possibly over $70 million.
