The Cayman International Youth football tournament returns next week and will feature local Under-16 teams from Cayman Athletic Sports Club and Future Sports Club against international opposition.
Grasspiece Promotions has organized the tournament at the TE McField Annex Field from Feb. 19-21.
Returning champions are Swindon Town Football Club’s U-15 team from the United Kingdom and Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo’s U-15 side. The teams will compete in a round robin format.
The majority of players in the Cayman teams will be representing their country in the second CONCACAF U-15 Championships in August so this is ideal preparation.
Coaches from Swindon Town arrive this weekend for a week-long Swindon Town Youth Camp from Monday for players aged 6 to 18 at the Annex. Swindon’s players arrive next Wednesday. The Houston Dynamo academy team arrives next Thursday.
Swindon Town play Cayman Athletic Select on Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. and Houston Dynamo take on Future Select at 7 p.m.
Houston Dynamo face Cayman Athletic at 5 p.m. the following day before Swindon Town play Future at 7 p.m.
The final games are on the Saturday will see the two Cayman teams playing each other at 5 p.m. and Swindon Town facing Houston Dynamo in the later match.
“Preparations for the tournament are coming along nicely and it promises to be another very exciting and entertaining week for youth football,” said Neil Murray of Grasspiece Promotions. “With assistance from the government and a number of corporate sponsors, we are able to again showcase Cayman’s talented youngsters against top opposition from the U.K. and the U.S.”
Swindon will feature Caymanians Kray Foster and Nathan Borde. Foster missed out on last year’s tournament due to injury but did feature for Cayman in the inaugural CONCACAF U-15 Championships two years ago. Foster has been in Swindon’s youth system for two years, as has Borde.
Borde played a role in Swindon’s win in last year’s tournament.
Tickets for the tournament are $10 for the three nights or $5 per night and are available at the gate. Children under 13 pay $1 with all proceeds from the event covering expenses for the visiting teams.
