Wine lovers cheer on local gymnasts

Local athletes received a boost from wine lovers who enjoyed an evening of wine tasting and food pairings at Grand Old House, which partnered with the Cayman Islands Gymnastics Association for a fundraiser.

Silent and live auctions also helped raise money for the athletes, and Mark Rutkowski and Bruce John won a raffle draw for a basket of 12 wines from Wine Spectator’s 2014 Top 100 List.

Luciano De Riso, head of operations for Grand Old House and an organizer of the event on Feb. 20, said, “We are always thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of our local talent with great wine and food, and wish these young athletes every success in their upcoming competitions.”

Also featured during the evening were a short film produced by local filmmaker Rob Tyler; and a performance by local gymnasts Morgan Lloyd, Raegan Rutty, Sami Peene and Igor Magalhaes.

Lloyd, who competed for the Cayman Islands in last year’s Youth Olympic Games and will compete at the Pan American Games in Toronto this year, will be joined by national team rookies Peene, Rutty and Magalhaes at the upcoming Inter-Island Games in Ynys Mon, off the coast of Wales. Proceeds from the event will support the continued development of the national team program, which continues to expand each year.
