The Cayman Islands youth travel hockey program at Kings Sports Centre enjoyed plenty of success from its trip to Florida last weekend.
There were four teams competing in their respective age divisions.
The Cayman Islands teams competed in the 8 & Under, 10 & Under, 12 & Under and 14 & Under divisions in the North American Roller Hockey Championship in Ft. Myers.
The Atom (8 & Under) squad played in both the 8 & Under and 10 & Under divisions competing against strong competition.
They proved to be the champions in their respective age division, winning 7-4 against the local Blackjacks team to come home with the gold medal. Jaxon and Jaedon Cover, along with Lachlin Lambert led the team on the floor with exceptional goaltending from Jakub Neveril.
The Mites (10 & Under) and the Squirts (12 & Under) were two more Cayman teams that were gold medal contenders.
The Squirts were in a big, strong division of seven teams and played exceptional hockey. They reached the final and dominated their competition 6-2 for the championship.
As for the Mites, they battled to the final buzzer as they scored three goals in the final minutes to bring the game within one goal. However, they ran out of time and finished the tournament with the silver medal.
The Peewees (14 & Under) competed in a tight division of four teams, all of which were strong competitors. They fought hard during the first game and finished with a 4-3 comeback win. The Peewees lost the next two games, struggling to find their rhythm and play as a unit. They did so in the final game though with only five players, but could not breach the opposition’s goaltender in the final minutes and lost 4-3 for the silver medal.
This tournament is the first competition of the 2015 North American Roller Hockey Championship season.
Cayman teams will be competing in both the Snellville, Georgia tournament in May, as well as the NARCh Finals in Estero, Florida in July.
