A new 5K walk/run to benefit residents of the Pines Retirement Home has been scheduled for May 17 at the Holiday Inn Resort.
Registration on the day begins at 6 a.m., or participants can register beforehand on May 15 and 16 at the Pines, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Organizers hope that 200 to 250 people will sign up. The target is to raise $3,000.
The main organizer, Paul Williams, is an avid runner. While speaking with Lynda Mitchell, manager of the Pines, he noted that one of the major areas of need at the home is toiletry items. The money collected from the walk/run will be used to purchase such items, which cost the facility about $500 per month.
Williams, assisted by Nicholas Connolly, Christine Piacente, Melissa Smith and the Flashy Nation team, aims to enhance the quality of life for the elderly through this event.
The Pines Retirement Home is excited by the initiative, organizers said, and thanks all sponsors, including Godfrey’s Enterprise Ltd., A.L. Thompson’s, Thompson Shipping, Island Cleaners, No. 1 Shoe Shop, Kirk Market, Welly’s Cool Spot, Cost-U-Less, Martinizing, and Pioneer Construction.
