Stingrays stay busy

Stingray Swim Club hosts two sessions of swimming this weekend.

Vigoro Nursery’s Friday Night Lights, a distance meet, is for athletes ages 11 and over. The annual, fast-paced Lions Sprint meet on Saturday is open to swimmers of all ages from Stingray, Camana Bay Aquatic Club, Treasure Island Swim School and Cayman Brac’s Brac Barracudas.

Vigoro Nursery’s Friday Night Lights focuses on the middle to longer distance events, including the 1500 meters, 800m and 400m freestyle, and the 200m distances in the other events.

Stingray head coach David Pursely said, “Our older swimmers gain valuable experience competing in these longer distance events.

“They work on their race strategy, aerobic endurance and technique and then use what they learn to prepare for the larger meets, both here at home and overseas when they compete and represent either their club, or at an international level, Cayman.”

Friday Night Lights swimmers compete for the FINA High Points award for the swimmer whose performance in a single event earns the highest points. One male and one female winner will each receive cinema passes for two.

The Lions Sprint meet is an annual community event and a nod to the vision of the club which built the Lions Aquatic Centre. Participation is free to all swimmers.

Encouraging all swimmers to take part is symbolic of the organization’s long-standing relationship with the club and their commitment to the community.

Stingray vice-president Peter Plunkett said, “The Lions Sprint Meet is an important one for our club as the Lions Aquatic Centre is the home of the Stingray Swim Club. Our swimmers look forward to this meet, as do our parents, volunteers and supporters, and we encourage everyone to register and take part in this amazing community event. This is also a great event to come out and watch, and we encourage members of the community to come out and cheer on the athletes.”

Stingrays will participate in the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association Butterfield 800m Sea Swim on May 30; the Flowers One Mile Sea Swim on June 13; and the Landon Von Kanel Memorial Invitational, presented by Coldwell Banker, June 4-7.
