Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has not given up hope of prizing Gareth Bale away from Real Madrid.
The Dutchman has admitted a “surprise” signing is still possible before the summer transfer deadline is reached on Sept. 1.
It raises hopes for the United faithful that the world’s most expensive footballer may still be heading to Old Trafford.
Bale, who cost Madrid around $110 million from Tottenham two years ago, had a miserable time in La Liga last season. He was repeatedly barracked by Madrid fans on and off the pitch and the fact that he has not learnt the language has contributed to his unpopularity.
Bale insists he is staying. The 26-year-old Welshman – now valued at $125 million by the Spaniards – is still wanted by van Gaal.
