Ferguson departs for John Brown

Academy Sports Club’s motto “Books and balls, you’ve got it all” still holds true after it was first penned over 20 years ago.

Academy’s Corey Ferguson is a member who strongly endorses that philosophy. The 18-year-old graduate of St. Ignatius High School left Cayman last week to attend pre-season football training at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Ferguson, who has played with Academy Sports Club since he was 11, has a partial sports scholarship to attend the university after being recruited for the football team through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. John Brown University competes in the NAIA, which is comparable to NCAA Division 2.

Ferguson was last season a member of Academy’s Under-23 team and was a major contributor to them winning the First Division men’s league.

Glenn Whewell, the U-23 coach at Academy Sports Club, said, “Corey is an outstanding young man. He has always demonstrated a very strong work ethic on and off the field. He is an excellent team player, never selfish; always playing for the team.”

Whewell added, “We will miss Corey on the pitch, but are very proud of his academic accomplishments and excited to watch his career in collegiate soccer develop”.

Ferguson and his family are grateful to Academy for helping his development over the years and a $500 contribution to his academic costs. He plans to major in kinesiology (scientific study of human movement), with a minor in sports management.
