In the first men’s softball final, played at the Field of Dreams on Sunday, Jose’s Escape beat Latinos 6-5.
The game was closely fought throughout in the seven innings. Jose’s teenage pitcher Jovan Whitaker was in fine form, and his teammates rallied around him by playing sound defense and making clutch hits.
Jose’s took the lead from the first inning and maintained the lead from there on. However, in the seventh inning Latinos came close to tying the game, but a well-played double play initiated by Mike Kandler, Jordan Stubblefield and veteran Rupert “Pitayo” Whittaker held Latinos short of scoring the equalizing run.
Leading Jose’s offense was Marlon Thomas with three hits, scoring twice and two runs batted in. Stubblefield and Kandler each had two hits.
The finals continue on Sunday from 2 p.m. when two games will be played.
