Eight contestants vying for the title of Miss Cayman 2016 received sashes from sponsors on Saturday at Abacus restaurant in Camana Bay.
Around 250 people attended the first official event in the run-up to the Jan. 30 pageant.
Since July, the contestants have taken part in a meet-and-greet, orientation, runway training, photo shoots, life coaching and charitable events, according to the Miss Cayman Committee.
Among those attending Saturday’s event were members of the committee and representatives of each of the sponsoring companies, as well as Premier Alden McLaughlin and current Miss Cayman, Tonie Chisholm.
The contestants’ charity this year is the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre. Each candidate highlighted and spoke about the various aspects of the Crisis Centre at the “Summer’s Night” event.
The next big event for the contestants will be an appearance at the annual Young Caymanian Leadership Awards on Saturday, followed by a trip to Cayman Brac in early December.
