Sailors will vie to qualify for world championships

Cayman’s youth take to the North Sound to compete in the Flowers Bottled Water National Youth Sailing Championship Regatta this weekend.

The event is at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club and racing starts at 10 a.m. Sunday.

This year’s regatta will hold events for the optimist fleet, laser (radial and laser 4.7) and laser pico dinghies.

Last year’s champions were Fenna Madison (optimist), Florence Allan (laser radial) and Austin Ziemniak and Josh Cumber (double hander).

The young sailors have been training multiple times a week in preparation for this event, challenging one another to sail faster with every practice.

Competitors in the radial class will not only be crowned national champion, but will also be bidding for a chance to represent Cayman next year in the Youth World Sailing Championships in Al Mussanah, Oman.
