There is a specific group of animal lovers in Cayman, known as the Protection of Animal Welfare Society (or PAWS) that focuses on the eastern districts of the island. Giuseppe “Captain G” Gatta and his wife Susanna of The Lighthouse Restaurant in Breakers, organize a unique annual event to raise money for PAWS, appropriately called “PAWS in the Sand.”

This year, it will be held on March 5 at its usual location – Rum Point in North Side. There is always food, drink, entertainment, and a live auction, hosted by none other than the incomparable Andrew Bacon.

Those who have lived in Cayman for many years will remember Mr. Bacon from gala events he hosted in the past. Although he no longer lives on the island, he always flies in for this specific event, which is very close to his heart.

If you do not feel like making the drive to Rum Point, you can take advantage of the free catamaran return trip, departing from SafeHaven Dock at 5 p.m. A complimentary welcome beverage is included in your ticket, so kick off your shoes when you reach the sand and browse the silent auction items, drink in hand.

There will also be a “one-of-a-kind” cabaret show while you enjoy a buffet dinner and a bottle of wine per couple, by candlelight. At this time of the year, the conditions will be perfect for an evening under the stars.

Once the eating is done, the live auction begins, followed by dancing the night away. It’s so much easier to get your boogie on without the heels.

PAWS in the Sand is the main annual fundraising event for PAWS, and all funds raised go to helping cats and dogs in need of rescue, food or medical help. Money is also set aside to lend a helping hand to families in tough economic times who love their furry family members.

There are a few tickets left, but this is a popular event, so do not wait to purchase yours. Put your paws in the sand on March 5 and support a great cause.

Tickets are $125 per person and can be purchased from The Lighthouse Restaurant or by calling 916-1731 or 916-3957.
