The RHSW Cayman National XV team started their preparation for the World Cup rugby qualifiers on a positive note on Feb. 27 by beating Club Select 61-0.
This was the first in a three-match series for the Reggie Hannon Cup.
The team, led by Neil Montgomery inthe absence of Chris Kennedy, struggled to get into rhythm in the first half, and led by just 7-0 after 35 minutes.
After halftime, however, the team clicked into gear and scored 9 tries.
Coaches Phil Pretorius, Gary Southway and Tim Rossiter expressed their satisfaction with the performance, and were especially grateful for the brave resistance of the Club Select side and the good work by their coach Mick Kehoe.
Montgomery, Dano O’Connor, Ben Blair, Morgan Shelver and Andre Ormond stood out for the National team, while Matt Dors, Dave Stringer and Matt Dunn performed well for Club Select.
Tries for the National team were scored by: Montgomery (2), Blair (2), O’Connor (2), Shelver, Phil Parker and Al Lum. Shaun McDermott succeeded with 8 of the 9 conversions.
The RHSW Cayman National team’s next match will be Saturday against the University of Michigan.
