Cayman track to compete in championships in Tampa

Top junior athlete Jamal Walton wins the 200m at the 2015 CUC Youth and Junior CARIFTA Track & Field Championships.

Forty-one athletes of the Mustang Track Club will leave for Tampa, Florida, on Friday for the 25th Annual Bay Area Youth Track and Field Championships.

The athletes will participate in various track and field disciplines during the weekend competition.

Leading the team is Carifta U-18 javelin gold medalist Daneliz Thomas, with national representatives Rashaun Conolly, Jeavhon Jackson, Shalysa Wray, Mikayla McLaughlin, Pearl Morgan, Daujaughn Murray and Kashief Dawkins.

The Mustang’s club coach, Tyrone Yen, is optimistic that the team will perform well.

“We have a lot of new athletes running there for the first time, but they have trained really well leading up to the meet,” he said.

Coach Yen says the older and more experienced athletes are expected to carry the weight of the team.

The Mustang Club, which in the last 12-15 years has been participating in Bay Area championships, will be competing at the University of South Florida.
