Visitors and locals in the George Town and West Bay areas have had the advantage of location when it comes to sampling wares at the markets. Camana Bay has its Farmers and Artisans Market every Wednesday; then there’s the market by the cricket oval on Huldah Avenue and in town on South Church Street. However, the eastern districts are another story. Shops and stands selling local goods are few and far between, so perhaps those eager to purchase aren’t seeing the full range of what’s available.
Market in East End
The Wyndham Reef Resort is now offering a Sunday Market to allow visitors in the area with limited transport, or locals who don’t wish to drive into town, the opportunity to shop closer to home. The official launch was on May 22, and it was a great success, encouraging the resort to continue its plans to hold one every Sunday.
On Sunday there is an added enticement for anyone keen to stop by and shop: complimentary breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Come for the food and stay for the market!
Local businesses and tour operators include representatives from the QEII Botanic Park, Pedro’s Castle, Cayman Kayaks and White Sands. There are also artisanal products from Laurel’s Pepper Jelly, Beach Bubbles and Willie’s Fresh Juice. No doubt more vendors will join the market as word spreads, so expect to see further stands each weekend. The resort is hoping to add more local produce, craft items and island accessories to the selection.
So if you’ve been craving your market fix but you just haven’t managed to make it to George Town, the Sunday Market at the Wyndham Reef Resort brings the experience to you. It’s an easy way to buy local.
The Sunday Market is open from 9 a.m. to noon. Call 640-3100 for more information.
