Falcon flying into Cayman

Anthony Mackie's star has significantly risen after being cast in the part of Falcon in the 'Captain America' and 'Avengers' series of films.

As the CayFilm festival approaches, the numbers of visiting celebrities swells. Anthony Mackie of “Haven” and now “Avengers” fame has joined the group winging its way to Cayman for the weekend of July 1-4.

Mackie was born in New Orleans and was going to be an engineer when he grew up, but he changed direction and moved toward acting, attending the North Carolina School of Arts and the prestigious Juilliard School where he was roommates with Lee Pace, according to imdb.com.

“Do you want to be an actor, or do you want to be a celebrity? I made that decision when I went to Juilliard,” said Mackie. “I wanted to be an actor. So, if I get the opportunity to be an actor and do some cool, fun and interesting projects, I’m going to do that.”

When he was his early 20s, he got a part as Papa Doc in the critically acclaimed “8 Mile” starring rapper Eminem, followed by a starring role in Spike Lee’s “She Hate Me” two years later.

Film roles that allowed him to work with award-winning directors such as Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”) and Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) lifted his profile in the industry and garnered him numerous nominations, particularly for his work in “The Hurt Locker.”

It is his recent role as Falcon in the “Captain America” and subsequently “Avengers” series of films, however, that has really put him in the limelight as a major star. He has made appearances at Comic Con and of course, on the red carpet, for the incredibly successful collection of superhero movies that have brought in millions at the box office.

That said, he has never made any bones about being happy to play supporting roles if they are good parts. “I enjoy where I am and I don’t have a problem with being Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci, Don Cheadle or Jeffrey Wright. They’re not the lead of every movie they’re in, but every time you see them, they’re really good.”

Mackie will be reunited with some of the cast members from “Haven,” filmed in Cayman 10 years ago. He played the part of Hammer, brother of Zoe Saldana’s character, Andrea, so one could say he will be spending time with his sister at CayFilm, as Zoe Saldana will also attend.

The director’s cut of ‘Haven’ is scheduled to be screened at the opening night gala on July 1 at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.
