The body of a woman was pulled from her submerged vehicle by firefighters after a BMW plunged into a canal in Prospect on Monday.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the victim at the scene on Marina Drive, but she was unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital.

Emergency services were called by neighbors, who reported a car in the water in one of the canals close to the Harbour House Marina just after 10 a.m.

Firefighters and police officers waded into the water, diving to free the woman from the vehicle. The road around the canal was cordoned off and the car, a silver BMW 320i was pulled from the water with an excavator as bystanders gathered on the opposite bank.

The car’s rear and front windscreen were shattered and its rear bumper was hanging off.

Police confirmed that the woman, the only occupant of the vehicle, had died as a result of her injuries. No foul play is suspected and an investigation has begun.
