Draws were the order of the day in the DHL Sunday Football League at the weekend, with three out of the four matches ending tied, illustrating how competitive the league is this season, organizers said in a press release.
In the first match at the Annex between Harry’s FC and Bounty Hunters, all four of the game’s goals came inside the first 22 minutes. First, Harry’s took a third-minute lead through Forde Pierson before strike partner Floyd “Irons” McKenzie doubled their advantage on 17 minutes. Bounty Hunters replied immediately by winning a penalty, which striker Caesar Puerto converted with his sixth goal of the season to make it 2-1. Then, just four minutes later, Puerto claimed his seventh of the season when he pounced to fire home and tie the game at 2-2. Despite both teams having opportunities to grab a winning goal, all the chances were passed up as the sides settled for a share of the points.
The late game at the Annex started with Luca taking a first-minute lead against Kings Head when striker Chris Healey scored. Kings Head fought back and managed to force an equalizer shortly after halftime when Padraig Brosnan hit his second goal of the season to give a final score of 1-1.
The two teams sitting in the top two spots in the Sunday League, Boca Juniors and OtisAir Wanderers, met in the first match at Ed Bush. The players had to contend with blustery conditions which made life difficult for both sets of players. As a result, according to the press release, clear-cut chances were at a premium, with goalkeepers coming out on top as the sides drew a blank in front of goal. The game ended without a goal being scored.
The last game of the weekend saw Maples Revolution pick up a 3-0 victory against Fidel’s Old Boys at Ed Bush. The match was evenly contested until the 24th minute when Maples broke down the left side and Colm Flanagan’s cross found David Taylor totally unmarked in front of goal, and he swept the ball home to put his side up by one. Adrian Dednam then doubled the lead just before halftime. In the second half, the Revolution’s Sean Lilley netted on 64 minutes to finish the game 3-0.
This weekend at the Annex it’s Maples vs. Harrys in the early game, followed by Fidel’s Old Boys against Bounty Hunters. At Ed Bush, Luca host Boca Juniors and Kings Head face OtisAir Wanderers.
