The Cayman Islands Flag Football League season kicked off on July 7 at the Annex Sports Field, with defending male champions BK Panthers taking on Maples in the first game of the day.
Brendon Malice found Neal Appleby and Demetri Chambers in the end zone for two touchdowns. Fabio Gall provided the extra point, which secured the win in the Panthers’ favor 13-7.
Next up was the game between defending women champions HSM Vipers and Maples Jaguars. Despite Maples’ strong defense, the Vipers offense was a force to be reckoned with. Ericia Burke, Jennifer Cotarelo, and Schmarrah McCarthy scored touchdowns giving HSM Vipers the win. The game ended in 21-0.
The third game was between newly formed team MaplesFS Titans and Miller Lite Hellcats. From the beginning, the game seemed to be tight as both teams played a defensive strategy. The final score was 14-6 in MaplesFS Titans’ favor as QB Kevin Solomon ran in the ball and Tikko Moore received a touchdown and extra point.
The day ended with the Greenhouse Lynx vs. Red Stripe Wolverines. The Greenhouse Lynx led the game with players like Vania Cornwall, Marleena Smith and Bernadette Beckles receiving multiple passes. Even though Wolverines’ QBs Antoinette Lewis and Anna Nyaundi struggled to make completions on offense, defensive players such as Nekita Saintvil and Martina Bodden showed that the team was not going to give the match up easily. The game ended in 20-0 in favor of the Greenhouse Lynx.
Flag Football Monday kicked off on July 9 with HSM Vipers and Guinness Sharks at 7 p.m. the Sharks did not shy away from the defending champions, but despite their greatest efforts they were not able to put a score on the board. Vipers scored two touchdowns and two extra points, winning the game with 14-0.
The night ended with newly formed team Uncle Clem’s Wolves vs. Miller Lite Hellcats. It could be seen from the start of the game that the Hellcats was determined to redeem themselves after losing their game the previous Saturday. They tried to hold off the Wolves on defense, with Perry Levy and Will Peguero receiving interceptions and Joshua McFarlane getting a sack. Paul Laidlaw did a great job running the ball on offense for Hellcats, however they were unable to score. The Wolves had a better defense, coming with sacks from Gino Hydes, Terrick Myles and Joseph Tatum and interceptions from Peter Whittaker and Brett Eden. Offensively, Wolves QB Jordan Stubblefield struggled to complete passes, however he found Ernesto Ebanks for a touchdown and David Taylor kicked for an extra point. The game ended with a 7-0 score in favor of Uncle Clem’s Wolves.
Ed Bush Stadium was the setting for week 2 on July 14. The Greenhouse Lynx were on a mission to take another win against the Guinness Sharks in the first game of the day. Christsania Parker, Marleena Smith and Shenel Gall were the main receivers of Lynx balls. Despite QB Anya Edun scoring a touchdown for the Sharks, the game would end with Lynx winning 20-7.
Game 2 featured Miller Lite HellCats against Maples. This was the HellCats’ third straight game and would prove to be their hardest. Maples proved to be the better team, with Daniel Canencia and Fabio Gall scoring touchdowns, and Nigel Solomon scoring the extra point. The game ended in Maples’ favor, 14-0.
The third game was between HSM Vipers and Burger King Rebelz. Rebelz suffered under Vipers’ strong defense and were unable to score. Vipers also demonstrated a strong offense, which resulted in a win in their favor, 21-0.
The last game of the day was BK Panthers up against Uncle Clem’s Wolves. Both teams would prove to be strong offensively, but in the end it was the Panthers who secured the 7-0 win.
On Monday, July 16, under the lights at the Annex football field, Game 1 started at 7 p.m. and featured Maples against the MaplesFS Knights. This game had spectators on the edge of their seats as both teams were strong, both offensively and defensively. In the end, it was Maples who edged the Knights 13-12.
In the final game of the night, Red Stripe Wolverines went up against Burger King Rebelz. Wolverines were strong offensively but missed crucial catches in the end zone. The Rebelz worked hard defensively, resulting in the game going overtime. Rebelz QB Keisha Solomon secured a touchdown, and the team converted the extra point. In the end, Wolverines’ QB Antoinette Lewis ran the ball in for a touchdown and Shanice Bodden secured the extra point. The game ended 7-6 in favor of Wolverines.
