Cayman sailors take top awards

The six sailors competing for Cayman at the Bahamas Opti National Championships were, from left, seated, Allie Capasso and Ciara Murphy; standing, Charlie Hunn, Xavier Marshall, Jaspar Nielsen and Matheo Capasso.

Matheo Capasso swept his seven races at the Bahamas Opti National Championships Oct. 12-13 to beat 41 competitors and take first place in the championship fleet event. Jasper Nielsen took second.

Both young people are members of the Cayman Islands Sailing Club, which nearly had a clean sweep of the event. Charlie Hunn was fourth and Xavier Marshall placed 11th.
Those four sailors were among the six representing the club at the championships. The other two, Ciara Murphy and Allie Capasso, placed first and second, respectively, in the green fleet competition for beginner sailors.

This was the first regatta of the season for the team.

This weekend, Oct. 27-28, the club will host sailors from five Caribbean islands and England for its Opti Nationals.

The competition will cap a weeklong series of sailor and coaches clinics including a two-day development clinic sponsored by the International Optimist Dinghy Association.
