8 teams battle it out for tournament title

Team Strikers are champions of the tournament for the third time.

The 5th annual Shellaz FC Football Competition was held Sunday, 30 June, at the Annex field.

Eight local teams took part – Strikers, Shellaz FC, Elite, Guinness, Bonnaca Boys, Logic, Joga Bonita and Gunners.

The day-long event is held annually in memory of Matthew Owens, who loved football and was a founding  member of the Shellaz FC Tournament.

After well-fought group stages, defending champions Strikers retained their title by beating Bonnaca Boys 2-0 in the final. This is the third time Strikers has won the competition.

Gunners won third place, defeating Shellaz FC in a penalty shootout.

Best Goalie went to Jermaine Slater from Team Gunners, and Leading Goal Scorer went to Rodrick Pearson, who scored a total of 7 goals in the tournament.

Noel Douglas, owner and founder of Shellaz FC, said in a statement, “It is the goal of the Shellaz FC organisation to promote football in the Cayman Islands and encourage community involvement in order to develop and help our local footballers and to make football look more attractive in the island.”

He added, “The annual tournament is the largest of its kind in the Cayman Islands,  relative to the number of giveaways and prize offerings it provides. This is  due to the generous support of its sponsors throughout the years.”

Bonnaca Boys made it to the final, but had to settle for second place.
