The Fidelity Cayman Storm added another piece of hardware to their trophy case Saturday evening, after defeating the Advance Fire Buccaneers for the 2019 Heineken Charity Shield, 39-22. The preseason cracker saw the Storm take a lead early in the first half with two tries from Gearoid Magner, followed by a conversion by teammate Conal Keane for a 13-0 lead. Moments later, Mike Luxton from the Buccaneers earned a try, bringing the score 13-5, but that was quickly answered by the Storm’s Luke Chart with another conversion by Keane. In the closing minutes of the first half the Buccaneers’ Raynier Nel narrowed the gap with a try.

In the second half, the Buccaneers looked to make the game level with Luxton going on a run, seemingly heading for a try before being blindsided with a high tackle from the Storm’s Theo Edman. The referee reached into his pocket without hesitation to show the red card, sending Edman off the field and leaving the Storm one player short. However, even after being granted a penalty conversion as a result of the high tackle, it was the Buccaneers playing catch up.

“Some poor decisions meant that it was a tricky second half at times for us but, with some smart work from our more experienced players, we managed to maintain a decent lead throughout,” said Storm captain Rupert Stanning. That experience paid dividends. It was not long after that the Storm’s Venasio Tokatokavanua got another try and with seven minutes left, it became clear that he was the Buccaneers’ biggest nemesis. Luxton managed a second try, but it wasn’t enough.

“All credit to the Buccaneers, particularly their younger players, for a hard-fought contest. We look forward to meeting them in the league competition later in the season,” said Stanning. Both the Storm and Buccaneers will play in the Cayman Rugby Football Union season’s opening games 7 Dec. for the Alex Alexander Memorial Cup, with the Storm taking on John Doak Tradeview Markets Iguanas RFC and the Buccaneers playing Queensgate Pigs Trotters RFC.
