Cayman’s gymnastics association and squash club have confirmed their athletes that will represent the Cayman Islands at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games next month.

Jade Pitcairn, Emma Turnbull and Kali Maclean have been selected for squash while Igor Magalhaes and Karthik Adapa will take part in gymnastics.

The games, scheduled to take place in Cali, Colombia from 25 Nov. to 4 Dec., consist of 315 events in 28 sports.

Cayman is also expected to participate in swimming, athletics and cycling. However, the teams have not been finalised for those sports, according to the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee.

“I am so greatful for the opportunity to represent Cayman at the Junior Pan Am Games in Colombia next month,” Pitcairn told the Cayman Compass. “This will be my first international competition since the pandemic, and I am looking forward to it.”

Adapa, who has also participated in international meets like the CAC Games, said his journey to the November competition has been rough.

“Of course, it feels great to represent the country,” he said. “I hurt my foot… this month, working on new skills but we did what we could to work around that…so it was really difficult…but [I am] definitely doing well.”

According to CIOC’s Chef de Mission, Janet Sairsingh, a full list of all the athletes set to represent the Cayman Islands will be released “next week or possibly at the end of the month”.

In addition, officials from the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association told the Compass while they do not have an official team just yet, swimmers Kyra Rabess, Raya Embury-Brown and Olympian Jillian Crooks are all expected to be selected.
