Cayman Airways has retired a Boeing 737-300 aircraft which has served the national flag carrier for more than a decade.
According to the airline, the plane, registered VP-CKW, was christened ‘Spirit of Miami’, on 1 June 2008 during a ceremony at the company’s maintenance hangar at the Owen Roberts International Airport.
“The Delivery of VP-CKW in 2008 to Cayman Airways represented a continued step in the fleet modernization at that time, transitioning from the 737-200 aircraft to the 737-300,” stated a programme from the farewell ceremony, which was held on Tuesday, 19 Oct.
Since Cayman Airways leased the plane from International Lease Finance Corporation, the aircraft has completed 15,308 flights over 18,313 hours and transported more than 1 million passengers.
“Throughout its life at Cayman Airways, this aircraft has consistently been one of the most reliable aircraft in the fleet,” the ceremony programme said.
The plane made its final commercial passenger run with CAL on Monday, 17 May 2021, as flight KX 2404 from Cayman Brac to Grand Cayman. It has since been flown to Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville.
Its retirement is part of CAL’s ongoing fleet-modernisation programme, under which the 737-300 was replaced with the Boeing 737-8.
