Two people were sentenced at the Grand Court on Friday following their conviction for involvement in the “widespread abuse” of the issuance of drivers’ licenses by a former member of the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing.
According to a press release from the Anti-Corruption Commission, 35-year-old Kimberley Roberts from West Bay was sentenced to nine months and two weeks in jail and 25-year-old Alex Rattary from George Town received a 13-month suspended sentence, as well as 240 hours of community service.
They had pleaded guilty to breach of trust and conspiracy to commit breach of trust in April this year.
The convictions followed a “complex and protracted investigation”, the release stated.
It added that the offences committed were of a “particularly serious nature”, citing the abuse of public trust, but also the “significant risk to public safety” given they led to unlicensed, untrained and uninsured drivers on public roads.
The offences run contrary to sections 13 and 52 of the Anti-Corruption Law (2016 revision).
The Anti-Corruption Commission was assisted in its investigation by members of the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing, the government’s Internal Audit Department and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, according to the details provided.
