Just two months before the Cayman Islands Football Association kicks off its season, a member of the community vandalised the Donovan Rankine Playfield in East End.

“Sometime between November 2nd and November 6th, a vehicle was driven on to the… playfield and proceed to recklessly destroy the field by driving at high speeds, in circles,” director of sports Kurt Hyde told the Cayman Compass.

The natural grass pitch, which was built in 1995, is home to East End United Football Club and following the “reckless” act last month, the turf was left with less grass and tire trails.

According to Hyde, the community facility is also used for students involved in afterschool sporting programmes; noting that the East End community should assist “in being vigilant” and also alerting authorities “of any suspicious behaviors by persons”.

“It is unfortunate that some individuals do not recognise the importance and privilege [of having] facilities such as Donovan Rankine playfield in their communities,” Hyde said.

He added that his department is pursuing CCTV coverage and has since requested “frequent patrols” from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

Additionally, Hyde said the field is currently being repaired with plans to keep the vehicle gates locked, with only pedestrians given access when football games are not in play.
