The year’s first PwC Junior Circuit tournament attracted 39 competitors, playing more than 80 matches all together.
The Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands organised the event, held 29-30 Jan. at the Cayman Islands Tennis Club, which featured junior players competing in six divisions.
“The tournament was probably the biggest local junior event ever held,” federation head Susan Lindsay said in a press release. “We brought together the more competitive players and those younger and less experienced and created one big event for everyone.”
Jackson Shambaugh claimed the under-10 division, ahead of runner-up Max Hoppe, and Lucas Laidlaw in third place.
Alejandro Vial, head pro at the CITC and tournament director, said it was “a great weekend of junior tennis”, with many different categories of play, some of which were based around the use of special orange and green balls.
These balls, he explained, are grades of slower, lower-bouncing balls used to teach younger players before they graduate to using the standard yellow type.
Players showed “a great performance level considering the windy conditions”, Vial added.
Jackson Pavlovic took the U10 orange-ball division, ahead of Jelani Blake and Hadi Ngiruwonsanga, in second and third place, respectively.
Aaron Rahamojan came out on top of the U12 division. Eva Pierre finished second, followed by Noah Rahamojan.
In the open green-ball division, Dylan Tonner took first over runner-up Arnav Dhurva and third place-finisher Justin Sy.
Lea Neverilova won the the U14 division, followed by Elias Drobac and Liliana Goss.
Albert Berksoy took the U18 division, ahead of runner-up Rafael Wejbora, and George Zimmermann in third.
Lindsay said she was pleased with the tournament. “I think it worked well: there was a dynamic atmosphere, a good crowd, and plenty of engaging matches.”
The next junior tournament is set for 12-13 March at the tennis club.
