Caymanian swimmer Jordan Crooks has raced himself into the record books, becoming the fastest freshman freestyler in NCAA history.
The 19-year-old University of Tennessee freshman won the SEC title in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2022 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships, clocking a record-breaking time of 18.53 seconds.
His result bested the previous freshman record of 18.67 seconds set by Olympian Caeleb Dressel in 2015.
Crooks’s latest success in the pool proves he is achieving the goal he has set for himself, telling the Compass last month, “My goal this year is… to make the most of every opportunity given to me.”
His time also positioned Crooks as the fifth fastest of all time of any age in the 50-yard freestyle.
This historic performance came on the heels of Crooks producing the fastest split time for his school during the 200-yard medley relay, where he anchored in freestyle.
He recorded a time of 18.43, which contributed to a bronze medal in an overall time of 1:23.35, marking the third fastest time in University of Tennessee history.
Crooks was to compete again Thursday, 17 Feb. The meet, at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center at the University of Tennessee, runs through 19 Feb.
