‘Twosday’ wedding on Seven Mile Beach after 2-year wait

In what could easily be described as a date with destiny, Dennis and Edythe Heller tied the knot on ‘Twosday’ in a wedding two years in the making for the Florida couple.

The Hellers made their Cayman beach wedding, originally derailed by COVID-19, a reality on Twosday, the name coined internationally for the calendar date 2/22/22 – a palindrome that reads the same forwards and backwards.

“We wanted to get married on 2-22-22,” Dennis Heller told the Cayman Compass via email Wednesday morning.

The couple wed in an intimate ceremony at Palm Heights on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hellers were one of four couples who got married on the day through Simply Weddings, owner Joy Basdeo confirmed.

She said it was an occasion to remember for the couples.

“Four weddings are unusual for a Tuesday, but it was a special day, 2/22/22,” Basdeo said.

Heller and his bride flew in Sunday specifically to get married here Tuesday. They returned to Florida the following morning.

“We came to the Cayman Islands two years ago and loved it here. We had planned to get married here but then COVID hit,” Heller said. “Originally we were going to bring on children and mates but with the current restrictions we couldn’t pull that off.

“But just as well, since this is not a first marriage for either of us.”

The couple had a wedding with their two witnesses, their wedding planner Dragana Vukosavljevic, who is the event and sales manager at Palm Heights, and one of her colleagues.

“I was happy to be a part of it. This special couple wanted a ‘just us’ wedding experience and we at Palm Heights gave our best to make it unforgettable,” Vukosavljevic told the Compass.

She added that she had a wonderful time planning “a wedding for a very special couple”.

Heller said, for him and his new wife, the Cayman Islands was the perfect backdrop for a simple beach wedding.

“We live in Florida on Longboat Key, which is a beautiful place by Florida standards, but the Cayman Islands is a very special place,” he said.

He commended Palm Heights for helping arrange their wedding.

“[They] handled everything and made all arrangements from hair and makeup for Edythe to a special wedding cake and a photographer. Everyone here is so friendly and accommodating. We were able to create another great memory here,” he added.

Basdeo said the Heller wedding, as well as the others, were a welcomed sign that destination weddings in Cayman are making a return.

“We are gradually starting to get enquiries from visiting couples,” she said. “However, it will take a while for the overseas wedding market to come back. I have cruise guests just waiting to hear about the resumption of cruising, to book their cruise and their wedding in Cayman.”
