The Department of Environmental Health is urging the public not to consume Waitrose’s green pesto with basil, following warnings that salmonella could potentially be found in the product.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the DEH said the UK Food Standards Agency announced that Waitrose had issued a recall for the product.
The affected item is packaged as “Green Pesto with Basil – 145g” and produced by Waitrose.
“DEH Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) have contacted all local wholesalers and supermarkets to ensure that they do not offer the affected products for sale to the public,” said a DEH spokesperson.
The statement continued, “DEH urges members of the public, to refrain from using the affected product and properly dispose of them or return any unopened packages to the place of purchase.”
Symptoms caused by salmonella include fever, diarrhoea, and abdominal cramps, which could develop within 12 to 72 hours of consumption; and last for up to four to seven days later.
“Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized,” warned the DEH.
“Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.”
