Not-for-profit group Cayman Connection has launched an awards initiative aimed at celebrating high-performing Caymanians overseas.
Kate Kandiah, Executive Director of Cayman Connection in a statement last week, announced the initiative called the ‘Making Waves Awards’ which will recognise “Caymanians studying, working and living abroad who have made outstanding contributions to, and excelled in their respective fields at a regional or global level”.
“We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on the achievements of Caymanians overseas. There are so many exceptional people that promote our community and share ‘Caymankind’ globally. It is an important step for our community’s continued growth to celebrate accomplishments beyond our borders. We are so excited to give Caymanians overseas another way to stay connected to home,” Kandiah said.
Cayman Connection has partnered with Compass Media in the initiative and is the official media partner for the Making Waves Awards.
Cheryl Birch-Gillies, Head of Sales at Compass Media, welcomed the partnership.
“Compass Media is excited to be supporting this initiative. We have so many amazing Caymanians living abroad doing fantastic things it’s exciting to share their successes with the people here at home,” Birch-Gillies said in a brief emailed comment.
“We look forward to supporting Caymanians abroad and can’t wait to see what they continue to accomplish,” Whitney Foster, Compass Media Marketing & Events Coordinator, added.
According to the statement, in its first year, the Cayman Connection Making Waves Awards programme will be made up of eight different categories to capture a range of fields and interests: Arts and Culture, STEM, Environment & Sustainability, Sports, Financial, Legal & Professional Services, Education, Health & Wellness and Tourism, Travel & Hospitality.

Cayman Connection, it says, is a not-for-profit membership organisation supporting and connecting a global community of Caymanians, friends and associates of the Cayman Islands.
Throughout COVID, the group was instrumental in providing support to Caymanians overseas who were unable to travel home and held virtual ‘yard chat’ sessions to help students stay connected and informed.
Further information about the awards nominations will be added to the Cayman Connection website and social media channels in the coming weeks, the statement said, adding that sponsorship opportunities are still available.
