Popeyes has regained the Burger King CoEd Flag Football League Gold Cup.
The newly crowned champions defeated Anytime Fitness 12-7 on Friday night, 6 May, at the Ed Bush Stadium, to take home the winner’s cup.
“Getting to the finals was the goal,” Popeyes receiver Kenrick McField told the Cayman Compass. “We had a great coach in Brendon [Malice] and a great core of talented guys and girls to help us succeed in winning the Gold Cup.”
En route to the cup, Popeyes was able to avenge last year’s loss in the finals to defending champions Deloitte by winning their semi-final match 19-6.
That was one of four semi-finals played on the day: two for the Gold Cup and two for the Silver Cup.

Anytime Fitness earned their place in the gold final by beating The Bird, 14-6. Credit Union advanced to the Silver Cup final, after taking the semi-final 6-0 against Anklebullies; Burger King won their semi-final 19-0 against Cayman Auto. Credit Union prevailed in the final, with a 19-7 win over Burger King.
In the Gold Cup final, Popeyes took an early lead after a touchdown by Abdul Patterson. However, his brother Clement Patterson, who plays for Anytime Fitness, would answer minutes after, with an interception that resulted in a touchdown. The ensuing extra point made the score 7-6 in favour of Anytime Fitness.
The game remained competitive, although Anytime Fitness defensive player Chelsea Green stood out with several sacks that prevented Popeyes from potentially reaching the end zone.
“We did have our fair share of hiccups heading into the semi-finals, as some of our key players were out due to injuries or COVID, but nonetheless, we all stepped up,” McField added.
In the final minutes of the game, Popeyes indeed ‘stepped up’ when Malice secured his team’s second touchdown that ultimately won the match and the Gold Cup.
