Academy teams exceed expectations at Target USA Cup
Six teams from Academy Sports Club recently competed at the Target USA Cup in Minnesota, which featured more than 1,200 youth teams from all over the world.
“Despite the two-year break from our annual overseas competitions, the club again demonstrated that our local footballers can compete at a very high level,” said Virgil Seymour, Academy’s technical director.
Academy’s U15 boys lost 3-2 in a fiercely fought semi-final against West Mont United Premier. The U17 boys from Cayman also made the semi-finals but lost their match in a penalty shootout to Minnesota Rush.
Academy’s U19 team dropped out during a quarter-final 2-1 loss against Fire SC Liverpool. The Cayman contingent of 101 players also included the U17 girls, U10 and U13 boys teams.
Cayman sailors up for several regattas
After competing at the Under-19 Youth World Sailing Championships earlier this month, Cayman’s sailors Charlotte Webster and Matheo Capasso are participating at separate regattas.
Webster, 18, is currently competing at the UKLA British Open and Nationals being held in Hayling Island, England, while Capasso, 17, is preparing for the ICLA Youth World Championships in Shoreacres, Texas, which runs from 23-30 July.
Athletics: Brown places sixth in heats
Caymanian hurdler Rasheem Brown hit the track at Hayward Field in Oregon for the World Athletics Championships over the weekend.
Brown ran 13.78 seconds in the 110-metre hurdles during heat six. His time was not enough for him to qualify for the semi-finals.
Crooks lowers 100-metre free national record time
Cayman’s youngest Olympian Jillian Crooks improved her 100-metres freestyle national record during the 2022 Bahamas Nationals championships earlier this month.
Crooks, 14, clocked in at 56.85 seconds, which was a .39 improvement on her previous record.
TKO ends beach season as winners
The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation wrapped up its beach competition on Sunday, 10 July, with TKO closing the season as the CIVF Co-ed Beach 4s champions.
TKO defeated Riptide in the finals to take gold and ‘I’d Hit That’ claimed bronze after winning their respective match. The next volleyball beach league is expected to serve off in October.
