An American man found with a loaded revolver and extra bullets, while trying to leave Cayman, has been fined $7,500 by the Summary Court.
The defendant, Robert Glasgow Owens III, was charged with two counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm, to which he pled guilty.
According to court documents, on 26 July, Owens, his wife and son, were due to depart Grand Cayman aboard a Delta Airline flight at the Owen Roberts International Airport, when security detected a .38 revolver.
The handgun was said to have been loaded with five rounds of high velocity hollow tip ammunition, and an additional five bullets at the bottom of his backpack.
“Mr. Owens, who appeared to be in shock, was cautioned and arrested for importation of an unlicensed firearm,” according to the summary of facts that outlined the case.
Owens told officers that he works as a chef in Atlanta, Georgia, and attends work at nights in order to prepare the food for the morning, so he travelled with a gun for his protection.
It is a fairly common occurrence for bullets to be detected in the luggage of US tourists leaving Cayman, and the normal procedure is for the matter to be disposed of with a fine of between $500 to $1,000 and, in some circumstances, no conviction recorded.

But a loaded gun can apparently sail right through.
