Pageant season has certainly been alive and well in the Cayman Islands this year, more than making up for past cancellations and delays due to COVID restrictions.
In July, a local contingent headed to Orlando for the International Girl Pageant. Then, in August, the Miss Cayman Islands Universe and Miss Teen pageants were held at The Westin Resort and the Lions Community Centre, respectively.
Now, on 24 Sept., a new Miss World Cayman Islands will be crowned at the Harquail Theatre.
Five ladies have been put through their paces in recent months, preparing to walk the stage on the big night. They’ve been able to practice interacting with the public at various lead-up events, including the sashing ceremony at Government House on 29 June; the motorcade tour on 27 Aug., which ran from West Bay to East End; and sports day at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 3 Sept. With all of that experience under their belts, there’s nothing left now but to dazzle audiences when the spotlight turns on them.
Pamela Ebanks-Small, who has been director of Miss World Cayman Islands for several years, emphasised at the sashing ceremony that the pageant wasn’t just all flowers and tiaras.
“Pageantry, like anything else in life, is hard work,” she said. “Anyone who successfully goes through a pageant journey must be commended for fulfilling the many commitments that are involved.”
The reigning queen, Rashana Hydes, will be crowning the winner at the Harquail Theatre, who will subsequently represent the Cayman Islands at the 71st Miss World pageant. They will also be awarded a $70,000 scholarship, among other prizes and awards.
(Note: This event was originally scheduled for 17 Sept., but was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.)
